Sports One down, two days to go for golf team UH ends Day 1 of C-USA tournament nine strokes back Cougar Sports Services After Day 1 of the 2006 Conference USA Championships on Monday, the Houston Cougars are positioned in the third place slot. The Cougars shot a score of 285 to finish tied with Tulsa after 18 holes. Memphis finished the first day nine strokes ahead of Houston. Southern Methodist shot a 278 to finish two strokes off first place while seven strokes ahead of the Cougars. Rice finished a stroke behind Houston with a 286. Alabama-Birmingham tied Rice for fifth place after Day One. Central Florida trails Memphis by 12 strokes, finishing seventh after 18 holes. Texas-El Paso shot a 291 to end the day in eighth. Southern Mississippi finished a stroke behind UTEP at 292 and East Carolina rounded off the top 10 with a score of 296. The Tigers had two players to finish in the top three. Kevin Fortin-Simard tied for first after the first round with a six-under-par 66 and Brad Benjamin fired off a 5-under-par 67. Houston had three individuals to finish in the top 20. Senior Kevin Newman had the lowest score among the Cougars with a 4-under-par 68, placing him fourth overall among 59 competitors. Senior Zach Mowbray and junior Ricky Romano tied for 16th with two other players, shooting a 1-under-par 71. Junior Pablo Acuna was one of seven players that tied for 39th, after he shot a three-over-par 75. Sophomore Jordan Irwin rounded off the Cougars by tying for 46th, after he shot a four-over-par 76.
