Come on down; the water's fine It may be hard to believe with the storm clouds and temperatures like Wednesday's high of 75, but it is summer in Houston. The birds are singing, the waves are calling from Galveston and the Astros are doing their best to disappoint as many fans as possible before making a tremendous comeback and winning the World Series in October. For anyone who wants to help out on that front, there are open tryouts for the Astros on June 10 at The Woodlands High School. Those looking to try out for something less glamorous -- and with fewer physical requirements -- should take the short stroll over to the Communication Building and fill out an application for The Daily Cougar. Summer is the perfect time to cut your teeth at the second-largest daily newspaper in the fourth-largest city in the U.S. If you have a passion for politics, stop screaming at your computer while typing a blog entry that no one will read; come write for us. If you know everything about baseball, step away from your fantasy roster and stop writing that thank-you note to Roger Clemens; come write for us. If you want to get to the bottom of things, quit investigating your bellybutton; come write for us. If you have been accused of music snobbery, remember that obsessive eBay searches for obscure vinyl are not attractive; come write for us. And, if you hate bad grammar, don't write any more letters to authors who don't know how to use a semi-colon; come stop our writers from looking like idiots. The Cougar is the University's student newspaper, and we rely on UH students for everything from writing opinion and editing copy to designing layouts and selling advertisements. We try to keep you informed and entertained, but we need your participation to succeed. And over the break -- even if you are getting ahead (or catching up) by attending summer school -- the academic load is rarely as heavy as during the regular semester. That's one less excuse you can use. We won't hate you if you don't come see us, but we want you to understand that we cannot function without student participation
