Life & Arts Barnaby's offers great food, prices by ROBYN MORROW
With a menu that can satisfy even the pickiest palate, Barnaby's Cafe is a fantastic outing for family, friends and dates alike. The cozy atmosphere, friendly staff and good food make for a great dining experience. Named after owner Jeff Gale's late childhood sheepdog, the childish decor, which consists of drawings of said dog in an arrangement of settings, makes even the most hardcore cynic smile. Large windows fill the inside dining room with sunshine on a clear day. A spacious patio is also available for those who prefer the outdoors. Fans are available for those afraid of roasting in the hot Houston heat. Also, for those who don't wish to be cramped together like cattle, each table has just enough space to provide diners the perfect amount of space without crowding or disturbing other patrons. The waitstaff adds to the friendly atmosphere with its amicable smiles and energetic attitudes. Waiters and waitresses go out of their way to please customers and always do it with a cheery expression. Without being too intrusive, they refill drinks and take away plates expediently. Customers will rarely feel more taken care of at an eating establishment than they do at Barnaby's. The menu, which consists of everything from tostadas to deliciously juicy burgers, is priced just right for the college student on a budget. With a hamburger running around $7, the deal can't be beat. These rather large, succulent morsels are cooked medium and come served with a sizeable portion of fries. Also, Barnaby's uses meat that contains no hormones, which helps keeps consumers healthier. Burgers come topped with cheese, blue cheese crumbles, guacamole, bacon and almost anything else one can think of. Not only does Barnaby's serve dinner and lunch, but the establishment also caters to the breakfast crowd and offers desserts, too. With three Houston locations ? 1701 S. Shepard Dr., 604 Fairview St. and 414 W. Gray St. ? Barnaby's is the perfect lunch getaway for students looking for an escape from the mundane daily trip to the fast food establishment of their choice. Each of the three locations is located within a 2-mile radius of UH, so customers can easily choose their favorite without having to go too far out of the way. One of Houston's hidden treasures, most diners have no idea Barnaby's even exists. With their arrangement of healthier choices, Barnaby's could easily compete with big time chains such as Chili's and Bennigan's if it put itself out there. With a parking lot large enough to satisfy a sizable lunch crowd, Barnaby's is also a cost efficient meeting place for families and business luncheons. Because of the friendly atmosphere and less cramped spacing, lunch meetings can easily be scheduled without the worry of interruption.
Barnaby's 1701 S. Shepard Verdict: You had me at organic.
