Sports Louisville Slugger can do it all as a freshman Cougar Sports Service Finding a catcher/pitcher combination player outside the high school ranks is a rarity in itself, and finding one that is actually decent is nearly unheard of. But Houston head coach Rayner Noble managed to land one of the atypical gems in the form of Luis Flores, who was honored as a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American.
Pitcher and catcher Luis Flores finished third on the Cougars' pitching staff in wins and innings pitched in the 2006 season. Flores, hailing from Moody High School in Corpus Christi, was not only Houston's most versatile player, but came to be known as a multi-positional threat. In addition to his duties as starting pitcher and catcher, he saw some time at first base, left field, right field and designated hitter. With a .288 batting average, 30 RBIs and eight home runs, Flores had above-average numbers at the plate for a freshman. He was also the only UH player to send two home runs over the fence in one game in the 2006 season, a feat he accomplished twice. Flores had the second best winning percentage on the team starting on the mound with a 6-3 record. Flores had a 3.00 ERA and tallied 67 strikeouts in 87 innings of work. One of Flores' most memorable performances on the
mound came in the Conference USA Tournament when he pitched a shutout against
the Tulane Green Wave. In his first complete game Flores allowed only six
hits and struck out six batters. This performance reinforced his election
to C-USA All-Freshman Team and could have swayed votes his way for Louisville
Slugger Freshman All-American Team selection.
