UH sprinter All-American

Floyd and men's relay team earn accolades at NCAA championship

Cougar Sports Service

After participating in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, sophomore sprinter Ebonie Floyd and the men's 400-meter relay team earned spots on the All-American roster.

Floyd finished in second place in the first heat of the two semifinal races in the 200 meters, clocking in with a time of 22.98 seconds. This came a day after a tight hamstring muscle forced her to drop out of the 100-meter finals race for which she had previously qualified.

Junior sprinter Ebonie Floyd advanced to the 200-meter NCAA finals after placing second in the semifinal Friday with a time of 22.98.

Seniors Preston Perry and Vincent Marshal and sophomores Tremaine Smith and Kolee Latson ran in the men's 400-meter relay final and finished with a time of 40.20 seconds. This eighth-place finals finish combined with solid races throughout the regular outdoor track season was enough to earn the 400-meter relay team its second All-American honor.

Louisiana State took the gold in the event by finishing with a time of 38.44 seconds, the sixth fastest time in NCAA history. Tennessee finished second with 38.86 seconds while Texas-El Paso earned third place with a time of 38.99 seconds.

Carey LaCour, the team's usual anchor runner, was unable to participate in the team's final relay because he re-injured his left hamstring in the opening round of the 200-meter dash. LaCour was ranked seventh nationally in the 200-meter dash in a May 13 Trackwire Dirty Dozen poll.

Perry also qualified to take part in the 200-meter finals in the men's division, but just failed to earn All-American Honors. He finished sixth in his heat with a time of 20.892, but feels content with his effort.

"I had not run a good race at the Midwest Regional or in the first round so I just wanted to go out and run a good race," Perry told UHCougars.com.
