Board OKs northwest campus

System branch starts with 15 undergraduate, 9 graduate programs

The UH System Board of Regents on Tuesday approved a northwest branch of the System that will open in the spring.

The campus, which the regents OK'd during a special meeting, will be an upper-level campus serving northwest Houston and Harris County. Students will get associate's degrees from the North Harris Montgomery Community College District or Houston Community College, then transfer to the System's northwest branch.

The UH System has already established two successful suburban branches, in Sugar Land and Cinco Ranch. The northwest campus is meant to take advantage of growing population and increasing school enrollment in that area as well as support from local community colleges and business leaders.

The northwest branch will begin with about 15 undergraduate and nine master's programs. 

Undergraduate programs available initially will include business, liberal arts, math, science, education, technology and hotel and restaurant management. 

The initial phase of the master's program will include courses in business, science, math, education, engineering, social work and technology.

The next phase of the campus's development, which will involve expansion of the programs, won't take place until at least 2010.
