Life & Arts Sonic Youth graces Warehouse Live Lewis Black rants way into Verizon Wireless Theater on Friday by DUSTI RHODES
How can people say that nothing good came out of the '80s? For one, I did (and things are going swimmingly) and so did a lot of great bands. Tonight, one of those bands will bless Houston with its presence: Sonic Youth. Many may only know them from the washing machine T-shirt featuring their name, most likely worn by the tallest, lankiest kid in glasses at your high school, while others have long revered the work of members Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo (especially if they were that guy in the shirt — if so, hey guys, you're great.) Sonic Youth will play tonight at Warehouse Live, 813 St. Emanuel St. Call (713) 629-3700 for ticket information. If long periods of drawn out distortion are not your thing, then head to Walter's on Washington, 4215 Washington Ave., for the spastic Mike Patton-esque rockers Man Man tickling the audience's ears with the Lovely Feathers and Apollo Sunshine. Call (713) 862-2513 for more information. Hardcore rockers Bane will also be fighting for concertgoers tonight at Java Jazz, 2502 FM 1960. The drive may hurt their chances, but it is summer and the Spring moms and dads love to use Java Jazz as a babysitter. So bros, watch the windmills because there's sure to be some little ones in the crowd. Friday night, take a break from the tunes and head over to Verizon Wireless Theater, 520 Texas Ave., for comedian Lewis Black. Judging by his latest release recorded at Carnegie Hall, this should be a good time to see The Daily Show correspondent. Black gets back to the stage with musings about politics, the news and his experience at the Congressional Correspondents dinner. (Don't say "nipple.") Saturday night, Rob Thomas and Jewel will take over the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Top 40 cover bands are planning on scarce crowds for the night. Lawn tickets are still available for $17.50. "She's stayin' / And I'm prayin' / That she doesn't know / What's on my mind / When she's around / She's stayin' / Complaining." Bowling for Soup plays Sunday at Warehouse Live's Studio. Yeah … The Unholy Alliance Preaching to the Perverse Tour
will stop at the Reliant Arena Sunday featuring Slayer, Lamb of God, Mastadon
and Children of Bodom. If someone out there can find a better way to celebrate
the Sabbath than by singing along to "God Hates Us All," then I'll go to
church.
