Theater festival thinks small

by JOANNA GARCIA

The Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre was sold out Wednesday for the UH Children's Theatre Festival showing of Cinderella.

What is magical about the 2006 Children's Theatre Festival is that it is celebrating its 27th year.

The children's festival will be showcasing Cinderella through June 30. The Elves and the Shoemaker is the next production in line for the company and will show from July 13-28.

Players from UH Children's Theatre Festival perform Cinderella on Wednesday for a young crowd in the Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre in the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts. The summer festival has been a UH tradition for 27 years.

"We normally do three plays with about a month run each; this year because of finances we are only doing two. Hopefully we'll go back to doing three next year," Berger said.

Production and rehearsal for Cinderella, going on now, began in mid-May. "The School of Theatre acts as producer, but it is a professional festival. That means actors are auditioned from anywhere. They can come from (this) school, New York and California, which they sometimes do," Berger said. "Now all the positions are salary."

Designers are hired to handle sets, costumes and lights. A production manager supervises all technical aspects of the show.

The budget for the CTF is about $150,000. It is also supported in part by a grant that was endowed from the city of Houston through the Cultural Arts Council.

The School of Theatre has the largest collection of costumes in the city, with the Alley Theatre being the first for non-musical theatre, said Berger, who is also the producer and director of the Houston Shakespeare Festival. Berger wrote the book and lyrics for the CTF Cinderella production. Rob Landes handled the music, and Chesley Krohn took on director's duties.

"We don't do anything but original plays, and we commission plays," Berger said.

Single tickets for children are $8 and adult tickets are $9. Group rates are available. For reservations or more information, call (713) 473-2929 or visit www.class.uh.edu/theatre.
