UH community loses three alumni, professor

Cougar News Service

Services for four UH community members who died will be held this week.

Richard W. Simmons, UH Law Center alumnus and U.S. Trustee for 12 years, died Friday. He was 54.

Simmons specialized in bankruptcy law and represented the region that included Houston for the U.S. Trustee Program, a part of the Justice Department that oversees the administration of bankruptcy cases.

Funeral services for Simmons will be at 10 a.m. today at the A.D. Bruce Religion Center.

Roland Sparks, associate athletics director for facilities and operation since 2003, died Saturday after a lengthy battle with colon cancer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Janet Satzman Chafetz, 64, professor of sociology, died Thursday of cancer. Chafetz°Øs UH career lasted 35 years, a dozen of which she served as chairwoman of the sociology department. A campus memorial service for Chafetz is planned for the early fall.

In lieu of flowers or the usual remembrances, friends are asked to consider a donation to the Janet S. Chafetz Fund, which will support graduate and undergraduate programs in the sociology department.

Pete Medrano, a sports photographer, died Tuesday of heart complications.

Medrano will be remembered this weekend at a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Home Plate Bar and Grill, 1800 Texas Ave. For more on Medrano, see today°Øs Sports page.
