News Supply drive marks 16th year HAO's Operation School Supplies
has raised more than $1 million
Cougar News Services Since 1990, the Houston Alumni Organzation and the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. have dedicated their time and effort to give back to the community through Operation School Supplies. The program benefits children by supporting their educational needs through donations of paper, glue, crayons and other essential school supplies. Operation School Supplies is a local effort; as it has grown, a number of other sponsors have gotten involved in donating supplies and spreading the word, including radio and television stations, newspapers and H-E-B grocery stores. This year, H-E-B stores are drop-off points for donations of school supplies. Through July 26, the stores are also selling coupons ranging from $1 to $5, the proceeds from which go to Operation School Supplies. Students receiving supplies through OSS must attend schools where at least 50 percent of students are on free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs. Since the drive began in 1990, Operation School Supplies has raised more than $1 million for the purchase of school supplies. Recent events like Hurricane Katrina enabled Operation School Supplies to extend its donation dates, accumulating an extra $5,181 for local elementary schools. Anyone interested in helping with OSS may do so in several ways: by purchasing Coca-Cola products or coupons at H-E-B grocery stores through July 26; by making cash donations or donating school supplies at H-E-B stores, the Houston Zoo on Saturday or the Astros game at Minute Maid Park on Sunday; or by donating at the red OSS bins located across campus.
