CLASS rolls out career database

New program aims to bring graduates and employers together
under same network

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Career Center launched its new Career Connection database bank July 19, which is aimed at assisting students in finding employment after graduation and other services such as finding internships.

"You're going to get top notch service from the time that you walk in, to the time that you leave," said Cornelius Johnson, program manager.

Created in February 2003, the Career Center targets students, faculty and employers to have a more direct access to one another.

"We really wanted to improve on building employer relationships by giving the students a database, here they could continually interact with employers and have a better system," Johnson said.

The center offers services, such as one-on-one counseling sessions, to help determine what the students interests are, by using personality tests to match working environments with students' character. Other services include a résumé review, mock interviews for those who need help with the face-to-face job interview, a resource center and workshops aimed at career exploration, job searching sessions and an internship or co-op workshop.

"This system creates a private school feel for CLASS. They have their own database, focused on art, music, history and other liberal arts majors," Johnson said.

The career center also offers a career-planning guide to undergraduate students to begin working on as freshmen and to use throughout their college experience. The packet gives a run through of questions and ideas that students should ask themselves and activities to get involved in.

"With the Career Connections Database, you have a system that can manage your job search," Leah Shields, career counselor, said. "As an alum of the University of Houston, I didn't have this service, so it's amazing to me to see the leaps and bounds that the career center has made the past three years."

With the opportunity to reach more students with the Career Connections Database, the CLASS Career Center recently sent out e-mails to the 10,000 Liberal Arts and Social Sciences majors, up from 3,000 in their database in 2003.

The CLASS Career Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
