News Sugar Land gets new degree Nursing program added with help of Methodist Hospital Cougar News Service The University and Methodist Hospital strengthened their ties this week with the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners' approval of a nursing degree program to be offered at the System branch in Sugar Land. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital pledged $200,000 for a new nursing skills laboratory building. The Sugar Land hospital is located just one exit north of campus and will provide students a place to train before earning either registered nurse or Bachelor of Science in nursing certificates. "We share the same goal of educating more nurses to serve the growing Fort Bend population and health care needs of our community," James Heizenrater, CEO of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, said in a release. Director of Nursing Jeanette Hartshorn has been working to build the program for the last year and said the board's decision is a step in the right direction. "We are very excited about the unanimous BNE approval," Hartshorn said in a release. "We've recruited highly reputable faculty members who are ready to start teaching, and we already have students waiting to be accepted into the program." UH-Victoria will administer the Sugar Land nursing program. "This approval marks an important milestone in the growth of the UHSSL campus and what we can bring to this community," Tim Hudson, president of UH-Victoria, said in a release. The System began working toward the addition of a nursing program to the UHSSL curriculum in 2003. "Methodist has been on board with us from the beginning," Hudson said in a release. "They wanted to be the first to show their support with this gift, and we are very appreciative to them for their contribution to our mission of fulfilling the higher education needs of this service area."
