News Former student sues UH Disabled ex-student claims professor denied his request for assistance Cougar News Service A former student with no arms has filed a lawsuit against UH, claiming the University failed to provide him with the assistance required by law, The Houston Chronicle reported Thursday. Gary Bradford of the Texas Civil Rights Project held a press conference Thursday on the steps of the Cullen Performance Hall to announce the lawsuit alleging violations of the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. Bradford was enrolled last fall as a music education student and claims that a professor in the psychology department would not allow someone else to take notes for him. The faculty member would not provide class notes or a copy of lecture slides used in class. Bradford said other instructors accommodated his needs. Donna Hamilton, a member of UH legal counsel, was present during the conference and did not comment on the lawsuit. "We take such complaints very seriously and we are committed to resolving any problems that we may find," Hamilton said at the conference. Bradford is not suing for any financial damages, excluding court and
attorney fees, but he does want UH to change its policy that allows professors
the choice of complying with the needs of disabled students.
