Groups shed light on AIDS

Cougar Peers Educating Peers and the Activities Funding Board will host their third annual World AIDS Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the University Center.

"Life doesn't end when a person is diagnosed with HIV," Michele Parker of Cougar PEP said.

She said that Cougar PEP sees that HIV and AIDS are a major and global issue that affects everyone.

Parker said she hopes the event will bring participation in the activities and greater awareness to students, faculty and staff.

On display will be two AIDS quilts. The "Come, See, Understand" quilt is part of the national AIDS quilt and will be on display from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the UC Arbor and World Affairs Lounge, Parker said.

The UH AIDS quilt, "Express Your Feelings," will be on display from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the front steps of the UC.

Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts and personal stories of friends and families affected by HIV and AIDS by writing on the Wall of Tears from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the UC Arbor, Parker said.

Other activities will include a Health Awareness Fair, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the UC, free HIV testing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the UH Health Center and a reading of names of people who have died from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the UC Arbor, Parker said.

The Women's Resource Center will host viewings of One Week, a film about AIDS, at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m in Room 7, UC Satellite.

Closing the day will be a candlelight ceremony with speakers and music at 5 p.m. in the UC Arbor.

"We want the ceremony to be a time of reflection for people to remember those living with AIDS and learning to continue living," Parker said.

Red ribbons and information about the event will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the front steps of the UC and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Commons Area.
