News Law prof receives national honors UH Law Center's Nimmer one of four legal scholars awarded Fulbright-FLAD chair by KATY UMAÑA
Raymond Nimmer, Leonard Childs Professor of Law, is the first faculty member at the UH Law Center to receive the Fulbright-FLAD Chair in International Commercial Trade and Business Law. He is one of four legal scholars around the country chosen to be a part of the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs program this year. A law professor at UH for more than 25 years, Nimmer is proud to be able to bring recognition to the Law Center with the award. "It's an honor for me and it increases the recognition level for the law school. The law school has always had the goal of being nationally prominent," Nimmer said. According to the Council for International Exchange for Scholars, the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs program is focused on rewarding senior scholars who have a significant teaching and publication record. The purpose of the program is to allow senior faculty members to take their experiences and apply them in different parts of the world, such as Australia and Europe, through grants. As part of the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs program award, Nimmer will spend a semester abroad teaching at the Portuguese Catholic University in Lisbon. It has not yet been decided whether he will be there for the Fall 2006 or Spring 2007 semesters. Nimmer plans to return to UH once his semester abroad is complete. "This is the first time I will be out of the country teaching an organized university course," Nimmer said. "I've chaired programs for two or three day spurts. I've also done a lot of speeches in Europe, but it will be the first time I teach for an extended period (abroad)." Nimmer said becoming a Fulbright chairman is a recognition that can benefit others in the Law Center as well as other faculty. "The impact is that the more faculty who get prestigious awards, the better the University appears to the world at large," Nimmer said. "We've had other faculty members that have received prestigious awards, and those add up and it shows that the University is doing well." Nimmer is the author of more than 10 books and has received a national book award from the Association of American Publishers. He is a consultant for the National Science Foundation and the Office of the Legal Advisor of the U.S. State Department. Nimmer is also the co-director of the Houston Intellectual
Property and Information Law Institute.
