UH officially opens its 'front door'

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Thursday to mark the grand opening of the $25.8 million parking garage at the corner of Calhoun Road and University Drive.

"I'm excited about (the garage)," said Dave Irwin, associate vice chancellor for Plant Operations. "I feel it's the front door to the University because we have never had really an official welcome center for guests and incoming freshmen. We haven't served them the way we should have."

The event included free food and drinks for students, faculty and staff and allowed spectators to tour the garage.

Students, faculty and staff helped themselves to cake Thursday at the parking garage ribbon-cutting ceremony. Construction of the garage finished earlier this month and restaurants and retail shops are scheduled to open later this semester.

"I really like its structures, and you don't have to go in circles a lot like in other garages. And not to mention the concrete -- it is very smooth," biology sophomore David Nguyen said.

The garage includes 1,500 parking spaces, 1,000 more than the parking lot it replaced.

"There is a lot more room than the other lots, and it's also closer to all of my classes," art junior Michael Chen said.

But the price of the upgraded parking permit is keeping some students from celebrating the new structure.

"We have to pay for the building and still pay for the upgrade of the tag. This I find absurd," pre-business sophomore Swati Patel said.
