Opinion This year, love each other, UH Jude Maydwell
With the new year upon us, we will see a rise in the stock of Nicorette gum and a tripling of the memberships to Bally's. New Year's resolutions are Americans' way of attempting to reconcile their past faults and slip-ups by vowing each Jan. 1 to "never do (blank) again." Here at UH, I am sure there are many of us with New Year's resolutions of our own, but here are a few that can make our lives here in H-Town a little more bearable. First, park less precariously. In my short time in Houston, I have seen the vilest behavior, not in dark seedy alleys, but in the parking lots on our beloved campus. I once saw a guy pulling out of a space to readjust, when a girl in a BMW pulled right into his space. She had about 2 feet of room and about 3 seconds of time. Part of me was disgusted; the other part, amazed. Walking to my car sometimes reminds me of vultures circling around a dead wildebeest or gnu. Cars just circle around, waiting ever so patiently for a space to pounce on. People need to arrive earlier, carpool or take advantage of our brand new multi-million-dollar parking deck. Second, show some school spirit. This is in reference to the lack of UH attire I see around campus. I know The University of Texas won the Rose Bowl, and I congratulate them for that. But you don't go to UT; you go to UH. We are your family, and we need support and validation that we are loved. Imagine your mom going to your soccer game and holding up a sign that says, "Go Timmy!" when your name is Elizabeth. It hurts. So don't hurt your family like that. Buy a shirt, a hat, underwear ? but anything UH will do. Third, lighten up a little. People have these things called opinions. A wise man once said, "opinions are like rectums: Everybody has one." I know some of those opinions seem worse than what comes out of said orifice, but people have a right to spew them. Life is not a third grade girl's parochial school classroom; some things in life are offensive. I am sure you will not agree with my opinions or the opinions of some of my colleagues. If you decide to express your disagreement in the form of the written word, please make sure your rebuttal is as intelligently worded and coherent as the writer whose opinion you are writing about. Have some respect for yourself and the power of the opinion. Thanks for your time, and have a great spring semester. Maydwell, an opinion columnist for The Daily Cougar,
