Lady Cougars must find a way to defend post for win

Houston travels to Dallas to face Southern Methodist,
looks to preserve four-game streak

The women's basketball team will look to continue their 4-game Conference USA winning streak with a win against the Southern Methodist University Mustangs (8-9, 3-2), at Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m. today in Dallas.

The Lady Cougars face SMU after an impressive 79-72 win over conference rival Rice on Sunday. Several of the ladies had career games; sophomore guard Tye Jackson had a career high 37 points. Senior forward Emily Fryter had her first career double-double, with 10 points and career best 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Nakazi Glover tied her career best in rebounds with nine.

The same intensity the ladies displayed against Rice will be needed to defeat a post-heavy SMU. Jackson knows the win against Rice was an important one, but she's not focused on the past.

"The win meant a lot, but we have to look forward and focus on the game, one at a time," Jackson said.

That falls right in line with head coach Joe Curl's philosophy of "take it four minutes at a time." But Curl has a plan: The fewer shots SMU puts up, the more UH will score.

"(SMU) is a tough place, but it is not about who we play. It's about us," Curl said.

UH will keep an eye on junior forward Katie Gross, who was ranked third in the WAC in three-pointers made with 53 last season. Another player to watch will be sophomore guard Katy Cobb, who SMU's head coach Rhonda Rompola said was one of their go-to players. Cobb had 88 assists last season as a freshman and has started in 12 games this season.

The Lady Cougars will also have to watch out for SMU's resident shot blocker, Sarah Davis, on the inside. Davis is also the second leading scorer on the team with 10.2 points a game.

The SMU game is the first of two road games. After SMU the ladies will continue onto Tulsa, Okla., where they will take on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at 2 p.m. Sunday.
