Sports One more slips past Cougars' paws Kinnard's shot puts UAB on top, notching another UH loss in final seconds of game by CHRIS ELLIOT
It was just another day at the office for the Cougars on Satuday, as their game went down to the wire against conference rivals UAB. With 6.3 seconds left in regulation, Blazer reserve forward Lawrence Kinnard drained a 10-foot jumper to give UAB an 82-79 lead over Houston. After a timeout, senior guard, Chris Lawson was unable to hit a highly contested, game tying three point shot. Houston falls 82-79. Last-second finishes seem to have become a routine for head coach Tom Penders and his squad, as it was their sixth game decided by four points or less this season.
Lanny Smith's 20 points kept the Cougars in striking distance of the Blazers. It also marked his second consecutive game in which he surpassed the 20-point mark. Gregory Bohuslav/The

Late in the first half, after a foul was called against his team, Penders suffered a close encounter of a more serious matter. The 60 year-old coach fell to the floor and was carried out of the arena on a stretcher. Penders received a technical foul after dropping to the floor. Cardell "Squeaky" Johnson hit both shots on the technical foul, and Wen Mukubu made one of two shots on the shooting foul, sending the Blazers into the half with a 49-46 lead. After receiving oxygen, he retuned to the bench in the second half, and continued to coach. He attributed this episode to dehydration and past heart problems. Junior guard Lanny Smith, who played a season high 40 minutes, also scored a game high 20 points, while fellow guard Oliver Lafayette had his best scoring game in a while with 15 points. Both teams ended the game with four players in double figures; from Houston's starting line-up, Ramon Dyer and Brian Latham attributed 11 and 10 points. UAB's Mukubu scored a team high 16 and Johnson added 13. The Blazers had two players off the bench contribute to scoring in the double figures, in the form of Kinnard's 13 points and Paul Delaney's 11. Houston's Lawson dished out seven assists in his
team's third conference loss and sixth total loss of the season. The young
team that began the season hot, aspirations to be in the top 25, needs
to come away victorious in close games or they will continue to find themselves
at the bottom of Conference USA's standings.
