News Luncheon will promote volunteerism Student-run MVP hosts informational event to give students opportunities to lend a hand by JENSEY ORTEZ
The Metropolitan Volunteer Program will be hosting a Leadership Luncheon from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Mediterranean Room in the University Center. The luncheon is an opportunity for students to be informed of upcoming volunteer activities and organizations. Linda Spencer, a representative from Big Brothers Big Sisters, will be the guest speaker at the event and will inform students of mentoring opportunities. "To apply to be a Big Brother Big Sister, it costs about $15, which is not much," MVP Director Justina Wariya said. "But if a student is really dedicated, MVP is trying to find a way to waive fees." Admission to the luncheon is free, but meals are limited to the first 30 people. MVP is a student-run organization that provides volunteer opportunities for students to be involved with, in and around campus. MVP sponsors many activities and special events throughout the year. Another upcoming event sponsored by MVP is Adopt-a-Block, where students spend a few hours cleaning up a block near UH. The event will be held Feb. 17. The intention is to make people on campus aware of activities, opportunities and social issues through events such as awareness cookouts, end-of-the-year clothing drives and recycling projects. Volunteer opportunities offered through MVP range from becoming pet foster parents to tutoring children. "We're always looking for students who want to volunteer or come into the office and help administrate," Wariya said. "It's a great way to get involved in the community," MVP office assistant Oscar Martinez said. "It's part of the learning experience." For more information about the luncheon or to join
