The University of Houston has extended head football coach Art Brilesí contract for two more years, extending it through 2010. Briles, who has taken the Cougars to two bowl games in his first three seasons as head coach, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to continue to lead the team.

ìI am professionally and personally honored to continue this relationship with our administration, our coaches, our players and a great institution like the University of Houston,î Briles said.

After making two bowl appearances in three years, UH head coach Art Briles has earned a two-year extension.

Briles received a one-year extension after he took the Cougars to the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl his first season as head coach. The University showed Briles the confidence and job security after this last announcement, but Briles believes his job is just beginning.

ìI think it shows stability and confidence,î Briles said. ì(That) in turn shows a wellness throughout the University and that we are on a path to betterment, both academically and athletically, and thatís the footballís part.î

Before Briles showed up as the head coach in December 2002, the Cougars could only manage to get seven wins in three years, while compiling 26 loses.

Since Brilesí arrival, Houston has put up 16 wins, more than doubling their win totals since 2000.

ìItís showing that weíre moving in the positive direction,î Briles said. ìWeíre getting there, but weíve got some ways to go. Weíre going to continue to take larger steps, to take us even farther. We will win conference championships, and we will win bowl games ?ó thatís our immediate goals and plans.î

In the 2006 season, Briles will look to improve on his 6-6 record in 2005, take Houston to their third bowl game in four years and will attempt to win the teamís first bowl game in 25 years.
