UH finishes season in meet with Tulane

Kiess, Cagnotto prove Cougars still dominant

The Houston Cougars (8-7, 1-3 C-USA) return home to face a Tulane (0-2, 0-1 C-USA) squad that has faced many challenges this season. Hurricane Katrina forced the original meeting between the Cougars and the Green Wave to be rescheduled to 11:30 a.m. this Saturday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.

"Well, we have one dual meet next Saturday against Tulane," head coach Mark Taylor said. "That's going to be a good challenge for us even though Tulane is a little bit weaker than they have been because of all the problems in New Orleans."

The Cougars, however, are riding high on the fact that freshman Tania Cagnotto and junior Anna Kiess were recognized Tuesday as the Conference USA Co-Divers of the Week. It is the ninth time in the 11 weeks of the 2005-06 season that a Cougar (or Cougars) claimed the honor.

Tulane is coming off a 130-92 loss to Texas A&M, only their second meet this season. After the Green Wave travels to Houston, they will finish their season with three more road meets.

This meet will be the Cougars' last dual meet of the season before the start of championship play in February. With a win, the Cougars will solidify a winning dual meet record for only the second time in two decades.

"We still have a challenge in front of us," Taylor said. "We're focusing all of our efforts on that. We don't want to overlook them because if we defeat them, we have a winning dual meet record, only the second time in 20 years."

The swimming and diving team will travel to New York and Orlando in February for the FINA Swimming World Cup and the Orlando Diving Invitational, respectively.

The end of February will bring about the Conference USA Championships all day from Feb. 22 to 25 in Houston at the Rec Center Natatorium.

"We are looking in the future at some of the other events," Taylor said. "We have the conference championships and the NCAAs that are coming up. We're just focused on what we are doing, following our game plan we've had for the whole season."
