Sports Houston puts on a show for Green Wave Latham and Lafayette lead UH in
offensive surge as Cougars return
by CHRIS ELLIOTT
Proving their point output against Conference USA rival UAB was no fluke, the Cougars (11-6, 2-3) put up their second consecutive 80-point game with an 82-57 blowout over the Tulane Green Wave on Wednesday in New Orleans. In a game of great importance for both the players and head coach Tom Penders, UH took the court with a feeling of urgency that propelled them to a 59-37 lead entering halftime. "Getting off to a fast start is always good when you're on the road," Penders said. "You start hitting shots and get a couple of easy shots, and you take crowd out of the game."
Junior guard Lanny Smith compiled 11 points and six assists in just one half of play. A strained hamstring has him listed as questionable for Saturday's game against Marshall. Junior guard Lanny Smith and senior forward Ramon Dyer led the Cougars entering the half with 11 and 14 points, respectively, but saw little time in the second half because of injuries. Junior guard Oliver Lafayette began to re-establish his rhythm in the win, tallying 19 points and shooting five for nine in three-point land. Senior forward Brian Latham (18 points) led UH on a series of fast breaks, a fast-paced style that defined the team early in the season. "If I had to give a game ball away, it would probably be to Bryan. He led our fast breaks today," Penders said. The Cougar coaches and players feel they have the
momentum to bring back the excitement that surrounded the team when the
season began. UH will look to continue its offensive resurgence against
Marshall at 7 p.m. Saturday at Hofheinz Pavilion; Dyer and Smith will be
game-time decisions.
