News Staff shells out for charity Donation outpaces participation in SECC COUGAR NEWS SERVICES More than 440 UH faculty and staff members joined together to contribute $100,531 to the 2005 State Employee Charitable Campaign, a UH spokesperson said in a release Tuesday. "I thank everyone who participated in SECC," John Rudley, vice president for administration and finance, said in a release. "Gifts to the Houston-area SECC were down about 7 percent, due in large part to the contributions to various relief and support efforts related to the hurricanes and other natural disasters that occurred during the year." In 2004, the University's contributions accounted for more than 12 percent of all funds raised by the 38 Houston-area SECC agencies. "The fact that our level of giving was about the same as last year shows, once again, that our employees care deeply about our community and are first in line when called upon to help in times of need," Rudley said in a release. The campaign, instituted in 1995, provides a way for state employees to make tax-deductible charitable contributions via payroll deductions, cash or check. Donors may choose to contribute to programs such as the Texas Adopt-A-Beach Program and the Save Texas History Program, or local branches of nationally known charities like the United Way. An overhead of slightly more than 10 percent ensures
that organizations receive the full benefit of funds. Last year, $8 million
were raised statewide through the campaign.
