News Council celebrates Chinese new year COUGAR NEWS STAFF The UH Council of Ethnic Organizations will host a ceremonial performance in honor of the Chinese New Year from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in the University Center Arbor. A lion dance performed by the Dragon Dancers and a martial arts routine performed by the Tai Chi Student Organization will be featured in the event. The Council will host a similar event Thursday, featuring food from Kim Son. "Our organization is (made up of) culturally-based organizations," said Qiara Yowman, assistant director of CEO. "We're always trying to educate the students on different cultures. This particular week, we decide to show appreciation for Asian culture." The Chinese New Year began Sunday and marks the beginning of the Year of the Dog. "Our goals are to let students know what Asians celebrate," Yowman said. "It's actually called a lunar year celebration." Yowman said CEO will make an attempt to reach a broad student audience. "It's important to reach out to the Asian population
concerning this event," Yowman said. "But we're trying to reach out to
all different cultures because we're trying to educate other students who
are not familiar with the different ceremonies that other cultures do.
That's the purpose of our organization."
