Sports Shutout weekend catapults junior onto C-USA award list Cougar tennis excels against first
opponents, now faces match-up
COUGAR SPORTS SERVICES The tennis team has started the 2006 season off on the right foot by completely dominating its opponents, Prairie View A&M and Stephen F. Austin, on home courts with 7-0 shutouts. Victories such as these are thanks in part to individual efforts such that of junior Loli Gomez. Gomez finished the weekend's play with a 4-0 record as the No.1 seeded in both singles and doubles action, and her outstanding performance has named her Conference USA Women's Tennis Co-Player of the Week. "I'm excited and proud anytime one of our players is recognized for their accomplishments on the court," head coach John Severance said in a release. "This is a good award for Loli and for our team." Gomez's first singles play challenge against Prairie View A&M's Marika Dawkins ended with a Cougar win (6-1, 6-1). Against SFA's Laura Harrison, Gomez gathered the strength to overcome a 5-4 deficit and claim a 7-5, 6-1 victory. "The good thing is that Loli can overcome when she isn't playing her best tennis. To win at the No. 1 sport when you're not playing very well is extremely difficult," Severance said. "Give credit to her for realizing she wasn't playing her best, but still fighting her way to a strong victory." In doubles action, Gomez and teammate junior Sonja Nikolic registered an 8-0 win against Dawkins and Antoinette Majors (Prairie View A&M) and an 8-3 win against SFA's Megan Langston and Kama Scott. The Cougars will continue season play facing C-USA foe Southern Mississippi today at 2 p.m. at Hattiesburg, Miss. The team will travel to Starkville, Miss. to take on the College Tennis Online No. 33 Mississippi State Bulldogs on Thursday at 3 p.m. The Lady Eagles welcome Houston after a season-opener, 6-1 team loss against Ole Miss, in which the Rebels swept the No. 1, 2 and 3 doubles matches.
