News Dance sign-up nears its close by ASHLEY ANTHONY
The UH Social Dance Club will hold its last official registration session at 4 p.m. Sunday in the University Center Cougar Den for students who are interested in learning particular dances such as the salsa or quickstep. "It’s a great way to discover one’s dancing talent. I didn’t know I could dance until I joined the club," alumna Chenie Huang said. Huang, a former officer of the club, now teaches some of the classes. The first class is free. "It gives people a chance to see if they like it or not," chairman Daniel Zhang said. If students do decide to return to take more classes, they have to pay $20 for the semester. Non-students can also participate for $30. The classes are broken into three groups: beginner, intermediate and advanced. "People who don’t have experience should try at least one semester of beginner level classes," Zhang said. "After one semester, some students love it and are able to move up a level. If they’re doing very well, they’ll try the advanced class." The club offers a variety of dances. Students can choose which ones they prefer to practice. "Everyone’s not always interested in all the dances we offer," Zhang said. "We give them a dance schedule, which shows what will be taught on a certain day." Besides practicing, some members perform their routines and compete. "U.S.A. Dance Houston has an event called National Ballroom Dance Week. We usually try to perform there as a group," Zhang said. The club has performed there for the last three years. "A lot of members have competed in the past and placed at different levels," Huang said. Dance competitions are not a requirement for members, who sometimes join forces with the social dance club at Rice University. "We recommend students joining as soon as they can. We don’t want them to join halfway through the semester because we still require them to pay the fee. We want them to get their money’s worth," Zhang said. About 60 students attended the first registration session last Sunday. For more information about the UH Social Dance Club, visit its website at www.uh.edu/~uhdance.
