Sports UH 1-0 in conference play Cougars beats Southern Miss in C-USA opener COUGAR SPORTS SERVICES The Cougars (3-0, 1-0 C-USA) took on Southern Miss (0-2, 0-1 C-USA) on Monday at the Terry Willis Courts at Tatum Park, coming away with a 6-1 win. It was the first time since 2000 Houston has played Southern Miss. Houston won all three doubles matches to take an early lead. Sophomore Brianna Bateup and freshman Vicky Simpson were the first ones to complete their match, 8-2. Juniors Loli Gomez and Sonja Nikolic were the next to come off the court, defeating the combo of Sherry Price and Grace Kammerer, 8-3. Seniors Kami Miller and Yolandi Terblanche finished the doubles sweep, 8-5. On the singles side of the action, Nikolic gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead with a brilliant 6-0, 6-1 win against Natalia Parrado. Next, Miller continued the trend with another win at 6-1, 6-2. Miller needs just four more wins to move into eighth place in all-time career victories as a Cougar. The Golden Eagles showed no signs of life until Gomez
fell to Sherry Price at 6-3, 6-4. However, Bateup closed out the day with
a 6-3, 6-3 performance to give the Cougars their first conference win.
Simpson and Terblanche finished out the day with 6-4, 6-2 and 7-6 (4),
6-0, respectively.
