Sports UH runners fare well at indoor classic Carey LaCour sets meet record in 400m COUGAR SPORTS SERVICES The Houston Cougars participated in the Houston Indoor Classic on Saturday and came away with some impressive finishes. Junior Carey LaCour set a meet record in the 400-meters, with a time of 47.57 seconds, and also displayed the best time this season by a Conference USA performer. Known primarily as a sprinter, LaCour's first open 400 of the year was amazing and has led to a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Indoor in March.
Senior Sesar Figueroa finished the 1200 meters with a time of 3:03.7. "As a sprinter, I always wanted to get out in the lead and run as hard as I could and stay there" LaCour said in a press release. "Coach (Leroy) Burrell and I talked before the meet about running the 200s at an even pace and still finishing strong at the end." Junior Ebonie Floyd was asked to run on the women's 4x400 and did not disappoint. Floyd was able to make up a 15-meter deficit and stretched a lead to three meters, then was able to hold UT-San Antonio with a time of 53.5 in the anchor leg. Sophomore Jennifer Hunt took the second leg with a time of 56.8, which gave the Cougars a .5-meter advantage, but on their third leg was incredibly slow, with a time of 62.6. On Friday, the Cougars began the two-day meet with a tough pentathlon by junior Rachel Easley. Easley held a four-point lead against Rice's senior Funmi Jimoh, after the first four events. Jimoh was able to climb over the deficit by running the 800-meters in two minutes, where Easley was almost a minute behind, with a time of 2:51.54. Jimoh was able to finish with a 3937 to 3698 lead over Easley. Easley, however, did make up for her performance in the 800-meter run by jumping a mark of 18-9, finishing only second to Jimoh. "That put a lot of stress on me emotionally," Easley said in a press release. "I knew I had to get in a legal jump or else because no points would have put me way down. That situation really drained me. Now, I will know how to handle it better if it happens again." Houston won its distance medley relay, on both the men and women's side. Junior Sesar Figueroa made 3:03.7 in the lead off 1200-meters for the men. Freshman Justin McQueen ran a 48.6 in the 400, while sophomore Chris White finished the 800-meter with a time of 1:55.9 and senior Calum Neff's 4:14.8 in the 1600-meter, was a C-USA season best of 10:03.29. The ensemble of Jennifer Hayes, freshman LaNeeka Allen, sophomore Tiffany Abney and freshman Oumama Hallal, took the time of 12:13.08. The Cougars will have UH/RunSport All-Comers next Saturday at the Yeoman Field House, and the New Mexico Invitation will take place all day in Albuquerque, N. M.
