Sports Cougars to face Islanders UH follows up win with bout against A&M-Corpus Christi by BEN GEGENHEIMER
Following Saturday's overtime victory against East Carolina in Greensville, N.C., the men's basketball team prepares for a much shorter road trip as they travel to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (15-7) for tonight's game. Tuesday's meeting will be the second match-up between the two schools in exactly one month. The Cougars pulled off an 86-83 double-overtime win against the Islanders at Hofheinz Pavilion on Jan. 7. In that game, the Cougars were led by senior Ramon Dyer's 19 points and five three-pointers as UH won its fifth consecutive game in a come-from-behind victory. In Saturday's win over ECU, Dyer's outside game did not have much of an influence as he connected on just two of eight three-pointers. However, his overwhelming presence in the paint proved to be a huge factor. The 6-7 forward snagged a career-high 18 rebounds and scored 17 points en route to his third consecutive double-double. As a result of his performance against ECU and UTEP this past week, Dyer was named Conference USA Co-Player of the Week for the second time this season. He shares the award with Tulane center Quincy Davis. Dyer shared the honor with Memphis forward Rodney Carney on Jan. 9 following the win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Islanders enter tonight's contest with a 17-game home winning streak after defeating Longwood 92-64 on Saturday. Four players scored in double-figures in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's homecoming game. Forward Mike Williams added 11 points and 12 rebounds, collecting his first double-double of the season. The Islanders put together a 27-0 run in the first half, propelling them to victory as they improved their record to 15-7 on the season. Along with Dyer, UH has been led by junior guard Lanny Smith, who scored a game-high of 20 points against ECU, including six three-pointers. Smith is averaging 13 points and six assists per game while shooting 54-percent from three-point range during the Cougars four-game winning streak. UH will face its final non-conference opponent of
the season in tonight's game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight at
American Bank Center.
