News SGA elects new officials One vacant senator, commissioner spots filled Wednesday by JEB SCHNEIDER
The Student Government Association met Wednesday to elect a new senator, election commissioner and alternate commissioner for the spring elections. The meeting was held in the SGA offices in the University Center Underground. SGA President David Williams opened the meeting praising the qualifications of mechanical engineering sophomore Judah Johns, who was elected unanimously. "We are always lucky any time we have a candidate who can fill a seat such as The Honors College or graduate seats because it is so difficult to come by someone who does that kind of work and still finds the time to represent their constituency," Williams said. The president also pressed the Senate to take up the issue of increasing campus security after his car was stolen from the Bayou Oaks Apartments complex parking lot the pervious weekend. "It makes me wonder where my $500 a semester is going, especially since now I have a vested interest," Williams said. Vice President Francisco Zelayla announced that he met with the new state-appointed student regent, second-year UH Law Center student Robert Johnson. "I have invited him to the next systemwide SGA meeting to be held on March 3 at UH-Downtown," Zelaya said. "He will be available for breakfast and a meet-and-greet." The next order of business was the selection of a new election commissioner and an alternate. The two candidates, philosophy freshman Stanley Call and pre-pharmacy freshman Chuka Onya, are both residents of the Moody Towers. Both students expressed interest in student government as motivation for their desires to become SGA election commissioners. In response to questions from the Senate concerning their awareness of election protocol the time commitment required of election commissioners, both candidates announced they were aware and ready for the challenge. "I want to try and get involved and possibly see what I can contribute to the community," Onya said. After being elected to fill the vacancy, Call said he looked forward to being active the SGA. "This will enable me to get more involved with the government process and will be baby steps toward (becoming a) senator," Call said. Onya was selected as the alternate and a motion was passed to enable him to automatically fill a commissioner's spot if another commissioner resigns. After the meeting adjourned, it was announced that three students from the UH4U party had already filed their candidacy for the spring elections: Francisco Zelaya for president, David Rosen for vice president and Ashley Glaw for student regent.
