The Houston Area Model United Nations hosted its 31st annual conference Thursday in the University Center.

The event, which was housed in several rooms in the UC, simulated the proceedings of a real U.N. committee.

Students from 40 area high schools participated Thursday in the Houston Area Model United Nations conference in the University Center. Nearly 600 students attended the event.

Committees range in specialization from the Security Council Committee to the Human Rights Commission Committee, in which students are given the opportunity to discuss international policies and current events.

University students known as the U.N. Secretariat staff all U.N. committees. These volunteers are from various universities throughout the country and have experience with Model U.N. procedures.

Clare Richardson, a student from the University of Texas and the Secretary General of HAMUN, is participating in the conference for the eighth time.

"I really believe that there is not enough education about the U.N. in high school," Richardson said.

About 600 high school students from 40 schools in the Houston area are attending the all-day conference. Each of the 40 schools is representing a nation.

Neelem Mohammed, a high school student at Saint Agnes Academy, is attending the conference because she "wanted to learn about world policies."

In 1975 Andrea Flynn, a high school teacher, founded HAMUN to let students experience the work of a U.N. diplomat.
