Divers go to all-star challenge Mannella, Cagnatto and Gitelson in Orlando after two-week layoff by JONG LEE
The Cougars will participate in an invitational this weekend in Orlando, Fla., finishing off Saturday and Sunday. Houston comes off a two-week layoff after defeating defending Conference USA champion Tulane 139-115, on Saturday Jan. 28. The win captured the ninth win dual meet of the season and mark only the second time in 20 years for the Cougars to finish over .500. Houston delivered terrific performances throughout that meet, especially juniors Szintia Szanto and Rachel Gitelson. Szanto set two school records in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, while Gitelson swept both diving events. The Cougars will have three participants in the weekend's all-star challenge. Senior Stephanie Mannella will lead the trio as Gitelson and freshman Tania Cagnotto join in competing in the 3-meter and platform competitions.
Senior Stephanie Mannella will compete in the platform prelims at 10 a.m. Sunday. Gregory Bohuslav/The Daily Cougar The event will begin with preliminaries for the 3-meter competition Thursday, and the 3-meter finals will start on Saturday. On Sunday, Mannella, Gitelson and Cagnotto will compete on the platforms, starting with preliminaries at 10 a.m. while finishing with the finals at noon. Houston comes into the event with a lot of confidence because their divers have done well all season long. To show for their achievements are 10 Conference USA Diver of the Week honors. Cagnotto leads the team with six, while Gitelson received her honor two weeks ago. The Cougars will not have another event until Feb.
22, which they will be competing in the C-USA Championships at the Campus
Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
