Sports Cougars lose opener, finish tournament 3-1 Freshmen players have ‘positive impact' by LOURDES CASTILLO
The UH softball team fell to 2-4 in all--time season openers when it dropped a 6-2 decision against No. 19 Florida (2-3), but rebounded with a 1-0 win against Kansas (2-2) on Saturday at the Cougar Softball Stadium. During the second day of the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational, the Cougars defeated No. 22 Oregon with a 3-0 victory and finished the tournament with a 9-6 win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi (0-4). "Overall, I'm pretty pleased. Multiple games we've had five or six freshmen on the field and that's something that we haven't had in a long time, but I would like to see us finishing stronger," head coach Kyla Holas said.
Sophomore pitcher Angel Shamblin had eight strikeouts in the Cougars win over Oregon. Stephen Pinchback/The

UH found themselves up 3-1, against the Islanders in
the third inning and registered five runs to gain a comfortable 8-1 lead.
Christa Raley's first career home run in the sixth was followed by the
Islanders' four runs at the bottom of the sixth. With a nice effort from
senior pitcher Crystal Briscoe, sophomore Barbie Love and junior Carla
Kennimer, the Cougars came out with the win.
During Sunday's early game, sophomore Angel Shamblin struck out eight Oregon (4-1) batters, while allowing only one hit and only two walks. Shamblin, a Conference-USA player to watch, registered a perfect game retiring 12 batters. As expected, freshmen talent is quickly making a positive impact as Katie Bush, Elaina Nordstrom, Laurie Wagner and Jessica Valiz each picked up two of a total 10 hits. Bush and Wagner also combined to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Nordstrom added another run in the third, before Shamblin's double gave Houston the final run. "(The Freshmen) are doing exactly what we want them to do. They are making some mistakes but that's expected," Holas said. One ball over the fence by junior Laura Durham in the fifth inning, along with powerful UH defense in the sixth, was enough to gain the first win of the 2006 season against Kansas.
