Sports Cougars look to lasso McNeese Pitching ace Shamblin leads team against Southland Conference champs by LOURDES CASTILLO
The Cougars will attempt to corral the McNeese State Cowgirls in UH territory today. Houston will rely on ace sophomore pitcher Angel Shamblin, who was rewarded for her performance against No. 22 Oregon on Sunday with the Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week Award. She retired the first 12 batters and was able to carry a perfect game into the fifth and a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Houston proved it has the potential to compete against top-ranked teams against Oregon in the last day of the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational tournament. UH finished 3-1 for the weekend after falling to No. 19 Florida and defeating Kansas, Oregon and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Sophomore pitcher Angel Shamblin will play a key role in today's game against the McNeese State Cowgirls. "Offense hasn't been a problem for us. We've out-hit our opponents in almost every single game, so I'm fine with the way our offense is producing," head coach Kyla Holas said. "My biggest concern was that (throughout the tournament) we let each other down as a team. We let some people struggle and didn't pick them up, so that (was) going to be our focus this week: getting back together and working on our teamwork." In today's doubleheader, UH faces the defending Southland Conference Tournament Champion and NCAA Regional participant McNeese State, led by All-SLC pitcher Jessica Denham and All-SLC pitcher/first baseman junior Jana Jones. Denham posted an 18-20 record with a 2.24 ERA in 2005, while Jones registered a .292 batting average and .322 slugging percentage. Jones also led the team with 59 hits, 11 doubles and 30 RBIs. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m. today at the Cougar
Softball Stadium.
