News College creates ties in Beijing Bauer MBA program advances careers in global energy industry by TECORRA BIGGERS
The C. T. Bauer College of Business recently created a partnership with energy executives in Houston, China and the Texas Medical Center for the start of two new Executive Management Business Administration Programs. The Global Energy Executive MBA program, which started in July at UH, is a 22-month program developed to advance careers in the global energy industry. "The global energy industry has a succession crisis. The average manager in the industry is 50-years(-old). Half of them will retire in ten years, who will replace them?" P. David Shields, associate dean for graduate and professional programs said. "Houston is the energy capital of the world and we are Houston's university and who better to train the leaders of the future?" he said. The total cost of the program is about $49,500. Among the many amenities included are a laptop, an all-expense-paid trip to China, meals and books. There are ten students currently enrolled in the global energy executive MBA. "The global executive MBA programs hold a very impressive group of energy professionals and combined expertise at the University of Houston," Shields said. "The idea was actually a market push for what experts believed the regions around Houston needs." Shields will be in Beijing on Tuesday, starting the affiliate program that will target senior executives in China's three largest energy corporations. "Expanding the program to China is a great opportunity. China is a major player in the global energy market," Shields said. The second executive MBA program was developed at the request of the Texas Medical Center. Along with UH, they signed an agreement for a joint teaching and research project to establish the program in October 2005. Beginning in June, classes for this program will be offered at the Methodist Conference Center on alternating weekends. It is a two-year degree plan with part-time study. The concept behind these two ventures is to bring
world-class energy management techniques to the largest energy companies
from one of the world's best energy economies, Shields said.
