Sports Lady Cougars improve streak to 10 in a row by LOURDES CASTILLO
Houston won five of five games, including a victory against a Top 20 opponent, during the Marriott Houston Hobby Invitational this weekend. "I'm really proud. That's one of the things we wanted to be, 10-1 at the end of the weekend, especially heading into (Texas) A&M. This is how we needed to be rolling into such big week," head coach Kyla Holas said. Junior pitcher Carla Kennimer became the second Cougar in four days to reach the 100-career strikeout record, while senior Crystal Briscoe saved UH in three out of four consecutive games. Against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (2-7) on Sunday, sophomore pitcher Angel Shamblin picked up her fourth win of the season in a 12-2 rout. On Saturday, the team picked wins eight and nine, knocking off Samford and Northwestern State 7-4 and 4-2, respectively. Kennimer (1-1) threw six innings tallying six strikeouts against Samford, while freshman Candi Kloecker struck out eight and allowed five hits and two unearned runs in six innings worth of play. In Game 1, UH wasted no time, taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning. The Cougars improved their lead to 7-2 in the fourth. Freshmen Elaina Nordstrom and Laurie Wagner registered two RBIs apiece, while freshmen Jessica Valis and Katie Bush went 3-for-5. Against the Demons (5-5), Valis was first driven home from a single by Wagner. The Cougars added three more runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Shamblin contributed with a 2-for-3 performance, including a home run and a RBI-single. UH defeated ESPN.com-ranked No. 15 Baylor 4-2 on Friday, thanks to freshmen talents Valis, Nordstrom and Bush. Tied 2-2 in the sixth, Valis advanced to third on a single and a Bear error, while Bush walked to first and stole second. Nordstrom's RBI-single was enough for the second UH win against a ranked opponent. Baylor (6-3) loaded the bases in the seventh, but was shut down by Briscoe's first save of the season. Kloecker threw 6.1 innings, struck out five, and gave up four hits and two runs. In Game 2, freshman Christa Raley's grand slam in
the sixth was more than enough to give UH a 7-2 lead against Sam Houston
State (5-6). Shamblin struck out six and allowed only one run.
