Sports Lady Cougars endure another pair of losses Shooting continues to plague Lady Cougars in home losses to Tulsa and SMU over weekend by ARICA JEFFERSON
The women's basketball team suffered two losses at the hands of Conference USA opponents in another difficult weekend. The team fell to Tulsa 75-54 on Friday and to SMU 63-61 on Sunday in the Lady Cougars' final two games at Hofheinz Pavilion this season. Friday's game was a tale of two halves, as UH (9-16, 6-8 in C-USA) saw a four-point halftime deficit turn into a 23-point Tulsa advantage in the first 7:04 of the second half. The Golden Hurricane opened up the half on a 25-6 run, leading by 23 with 12:56 left in the game before UH made its second field goal of the half.
Sophomore guard Tye Jackson lead the Lady Cougars with 19 points and nine rebounds in their Friday night loss to Tulsa. Nada Elsayed/The Daily Cougar During a span of nearly 10 minutes, which included the final two minutes of the first half, UH tallied only a single field goal. The ladies were one for 15 from the field. Sophomore guard Tye Jackson led all players with 19 points. She also finished with a team-high nine rebounds, adding four assists and two blocks. Freshman guard Sha'Ratta Hawkins and sophomore forward Ryan Meyers tallied 11 points each, with Meyers chipping in six rebounds and Hawkins adding four boards and three blocks. UH tallied 19 points off of Tulsa's 22 turnovers, while only committing 11 of its own. The Lady Cougar defense was automatic as usual Sunday -- the team forced 24 SMU turnovers and converted that into 22 points. The ladies also controlled the inside game, winning the battle of points in the paint outscoring SMU 26-20; they out-rebounded the Mustangs offensively 13-11 and came away with 11 second chance points. However, the game came down to one thing -- shooting. The Lady Cougars shot only 29 percent in the first half. Hawkins and SMU's Katie Gross tied for the game high with 20 points a piece, while SMU's Janielle Dodds pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. For UH, Jackson finished with 17 points and freshman guard Nakazi Glover added 11. UH heads back on the road to face Memphis at 7 p.m.
Friday before squaring off with UAB at 2 p.m. Sunday.
