SFAC hearings close Tuesday

Because of 'tight budget year,' many campus organizations' requests called into question

The Student Fees Advisory Committee met Tuesday for its final day of hearings. Vice President for Student Affairs Elwyn C. Lee presented a list of recommendations based on funding requests made by campus organizations and departments.

Lee called into question the base augmentations made by campus organizations, including the Blaffer Gallery.

"Because of the tight budget year, the $5,000 requested by Blaffer … I would probably not base fund that," Lee said.

Lee also said he supported funding half of the augmentation requests made by Campus Activities and the Child Care Center.

Though no final estimates were made at the hearing, Lee suggested the committee look into funding at least some part of the Forensics Society's $34,080 base augmentation request.

"I'm in favor of finding a way to continue that program," Lee said. Lee also suggested that the committee deny the $66,489 one-time allocation request from the Center for Student with Disabilities.

"While the request is worthy, I don't think it should come from this source of funds," Lee said.

Committee member and chemistry professor Simon Bott questioned Lee's proposal to deny the marching band's $80,000 request for travel funds and suggested that the committee haggle to lower the request.

Lee proposed a contingency budget to pay for future travel costs. "I think this is going to be a problem if the (football) team continues to be as good as it is," Lee said.

Nancy Tulley, business administrator for the department of Residential Life and Housing, and Sandy Coltharp, associate director for Residential Life and Housing, requested a one-time allocation for utility costs on behalf of the A.D. Bruce Religion Center for both the 2006 and 2007 Fiscal Years.

This request brings the total funding from student fees for the center to $18,861 for the FY 2006 and $32,845 for FY 2007.
