Student group seeks talent

Pakistani Student Association hosts auditions today
for talent show fundraiser

by SAMMER NAGRA

The Pakistani Student Association is holding auditions today and Thursday for their talent show fundraiser, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the UC's Tejas Room.

The association is seeking actors, models, dancers and theater students who would like to participate in or help organize the show.

"This show will be a cultural extravaganza for UH students and Houstonians in keeping with old PSA traditions," PSA President Masroor Bukhari said.

The show will take place in April, but no date has been set.

Bukhari said the show will benefit the Pakistani community in several ways. It will entertain and educate students about the PSA and raise money for various Pakistani causes.

This year, the show's proceeds will go to the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation.

SIUT is a public-sector health organization in the Pakistani province of Sindth that provides free, comprehensive and modern medical care in kidney diseases and transplantation to poor citizens of rural areas.

These locations have virtually no medical facilities available, and the residents are financially incapable of affording modern diagnostic testing, treatment and transplant facilities.

PSA officials said the show is expected to draw a crowd of 1,200 students, faculty, staff and alumni and will include performances ranging from a fashion show to choreographed dances and skits.

"The purpose of PSA is to establish a platform where not only Pakistanis but all students can come together," Bukhari said.

The PSA was motivated to revive fundraising on campus after earthquakes in Pakistan killed nearly 3.5 million people.

"It's is not only patriotism that pushes us. In addition to aiming to raise funds, we want to create awareness and stress the importance of reaching out to others," PSA Vice President Salman Amanullah said.
