Lady Cougars meet their match at Texas A&M

COUGAR SPORTS SERVICES

The Cougars (10-3) saw an end to their 10-game winning streak as No. 8 Texas A&M managed to score the winning runs late in both doubleheader games, claiming 7-2 and 4-1 wins Wednesday at College Station.

"I was very proud of our pitching staff," assistant coach Beth McClendon said in a release. "Our team played well, but in the end, Texas A&M took advantage of the extra opportunities that we gave them. We're a young team out there starting six freshmen and hopefully we can use this as a learning experience."

Freshman Candi Kloecker registered her first collegiate home run in the second of Wednesday's losses against Texas A&M.

Youth certainly seemed to play a part in the losses -- all 11 Aggie runs were unearned.

In Game 2, freshmen talent put the Cougars on the board in the first after shortstop Jessica Valis singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Katie Bush. Valis scored after a wild pitch and freshman catcher Elaina Nordstrom's sacrifice fly.

Tied at 1-1 in the sixth thanks to a double by Aggie sophomore Amanda Scarborough, sophomore Aggie Jamie Hinshaw hit a three-run homer to give A&M a comfortable 4-1 lead with one inning remaining.

In Game 1, a ball that deflected off freshman right fielder Laurie Wagner's glove let the Aggies to take a 1-0 lead in the sixth with the bases loaded. Senior Rocky Spencer's line drive put two more runs on the board. Wind blew junior Joy Davis' fly in front of junior outfielder Jamie Adams, adding the remaining three Aggie runs.

UH continued to fight in the last inning as Nordstrom registered her first collegiate home run and extended her hitting streak to 12 games, and sophomore pitcher Angel Shamblin contributed with a RBI single.

Shamblin gave up seven hits and now holds a 4-1 record. After being named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week on Monday, junior Candi Kloecker (4-1) registered her fist loss of the season.

The Cougars will face the Brigham Young Cougars at the opener of the Crowne Plaza Classic at 7 p.m. today at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
