Sports Tennis returns after almost two weeks off Cougars begin play Memphis Saturday, will match up against UT-San Antonio on Sunday by MARK SUAREZ
Coming off a 12-day layoff, the UH tennis team will hit the courts this weekend energized and eager to continue its winning ways. The No. 70 ranked Cougars (5-1) are off to a quick start and will face the Memphis Tigers (2-2) on Saturday at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts at 10:30 a.m. They will then travel to San Antonio for a Sunday match against the University of Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (3-2). That match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.

The Daily Cougar The conference match-up with Memphis will certainly test the Cougars at home, and head coach John Severance is eager to see how his team will respond after its time off. "The time off was important because we needed to rest and recharge our batteries. Now we are anxious to get back on the court," Severance said. Memphis (2-2) is coming off a road loss to the University of Arkansas-Little Rock and will play the Sam Houston State Bearcats on Friday before meeting the Cougars on Saturday. So far this season, their wins have come against unranked Chattanooga and Murray State. In San Antonio, the Cougars will face a team that has won two of their last three matches. Houston has a 2-1 record on the road this season, including a win against nationally ranked Mississippi State. Severance expects his team to continue to play hard, and he knows the Roadrunners will be a tough opponent on their home court. "San Antonio hasn't gotten the credit they deserve (this season). They're a good team, and just because we're the nationally ranked team doesn't mean it's going to be easy," Severance said. Texas San Antonio (3-2) will travel to No. 33 ranked Texas A&M this Friday before returning home to face the Cougars on Sunday. Their trip to College Station will be their first away match of the season. Though it is still early in the season, they have proven to be a resilient team on the court. This weekend the Cougars will certainly be looking to keep the momentum going. So far this season, they are undefeated at Hoff Courts and have only lost once on the road.
