March Madness makes for memories

Sports Guy

Eli Jabbe

March Madness: It's the time of the year where anything goes and where legends are made.

Sixty-four teams, composed of the usual favorites, underdogs and sleepers all try to reach the ultimate goal -- a NCAA championship.

Here is a look back at just a few classic March Madness moments.

1. Chris Webber and "The timeout" --Chris Webber was part of the Fabulous Five, which was the early 1990's lineup that brought Michigan to national fame. With their hip-hop swagger, the Fab Five, whose most notable members included Chris Webber, Jalen Rose and current Houston Rocket Juwan Howard, brought their own style to the game and went to the national championship two years in a row. But what they might be remembered for by most is an embarrassing moment. Of course, I'm referring to the infamous 1993 championship. With the game heading down to the wire Webber pulled down a rebound. His team trailed North Carolina by two points. Webber hesitantly dribbled up the floor and then made the mistake of calling a timeout that his team didn't have. As a result, a technical foul was called on Webber and the Tar Heels made the free throw with 11 seconds left that sealed the deal.

2. Tyus Edney's lightning-fast score: The year was 1995, and top dog University of California-Los Angeles faced the University of Missouri-Columbia in the second round. The UCLA Bruins were favored in this game, but they found themselves trailing by one point with 4.8 seconds left. To make matters worse, they would have to travel the length of the court to score because they weren't able to inbound the ball from half-court. But the Bruins had a special weapon for this occasion: speedy 5-foot-10-inch point guard Tyus Edney. Edney raced up the court to finish with a lay up just as time expired, giving the Bruins a 75-74 win. UCLA would go on to win it all that year. This game winner for UCLA will always be one of the most memorable NCAA tournaments for me because I grew up in L.A. (And besides, this is my column and I can put in whatever I want.)

3. Indiana shocks Duke -- No NCAA tournament column would be complete without a reference to at least one upset. One of the most recent ones is the 74-73 Indiana upset over Duke.

Duke guard Jason Williams missed a potential game-tying free throw, and forward Carlos Boozer somehow missed the tip-in, and like that, Indiana pulled off a huge upset. Williams then start crying uncontrollably, an unforgettable image that epitomized the raw emotion of the NCAA tournament.
