Bands battle to play at Frontier Fiesta

by GERONIMO RODRIGUEZ
The Daily Cougar

Four local bands will battle it out today with a chance to win what every aspiring musician yearns for: exposure.

The winner of today's Battle of the Bands contest will earn the opening act honors for Frontier Fiesta's main acts Randy Rogers Band and Reckless Kelly on April 1, Frontier Fiesta Chairman Brian Sellen said.

The contest is from 5 to 9 p.m. in the UC's Houston Room.

The is the first time the Frontier Fiesta Association has held a contest involving local bands to determine which one will open for the main act, Sellen said.

The bands -- Blistered Glory, Feeding James, Carcen and Whiskey Dick -- will also be competing for eight hours of free recording time from Light In Sound Recording Studios.

"One of the first reasons we decided to do it is because there's never been student involvement in this part of Frontier Fiesta," Sellen said. "(Fiesta) is typically about variety shows and cook-offs, and there has never been a place for aspiring musicians to perform."

Frontier Fiesta, University Center and Student Program Board officials involved in the event asked that bands entering the contest have at least one member who is enrolled at UH.

Jim Fawcett, manager of the UC Programs and Marketing, said the event is programmed to get students more involved and help them at the same time.

"I think if this year goes well, which I have confidence that it will, I don't see why we wouldn't do it again next year," Fawcett said.

Women in film

The Transnational Film Festival, a month-long event helping celebrate Women's History Month through film, begins at 5:15 p.m. today in the UC Underground's Pacific Room.

The first presentation, Sisters of the Screen: African Women in the Cinema, will feature guest speakers Steven Mintz, a UH history professor, and Leslie Hewitt, curator of the Project Row Houses Film Series.
