STAR receives grant for research

Study focuses on benefits of groups for exercise, dieting

The University's Competitive Grants to Enhance and Advance Research and the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health are funding a new group research project focusing on health among black women.

The Striving Together Achieving Results project will try to determine the legitimacy of positive influence in a group setting regarding regular exercise and healthy eating.

The study, which will simultaneously be conducted in Houston and Austin, will focus on black women because the group has been observed to be at a higher risk for obesity and other related illnesses.

Rebecca Lee, the lead investigator for the STAR project and assistant health and human performance professor said there is a lack of research for this demographic.

"We're hoping to partner with community centers, churches and other organizations as we continue with this important research," Lee said in a release.

Participants are required to consent to attending weekly classes about physical activity or nutrition.

"Group strategies, like Weight Watchers, have been successful in helping people meet individual goals. This project is different because it focuses on a group of women with a shared goal," Lee said in a release.
