Sports UH gets win on Saturday Kami Miller moves to No. 8 on wins list by MARK SUAREZ
The No. 70 ranked Cougars had a tough time getting started this past weekend, as bad weather led to the eventual cancellation of their scheduled home match with Memphis on Saturday. On Sunday, the Cougars once again found themselves playing the waiting game; this time in San Antonio, as their match with the University of Texas San Antonio was postponed to an afternoon start. But their patience would pay off as the Cougars (6-1) cruised to a 5-2 victory over the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (3-3). The Cougars started strong as junior Loli Gomez tallied a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Nathalie Wallin at the No. 1 singles position and sophomore Brianna Bateup notched a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sandra Kukla in the No.2 position. In the No. 3 position, senior Kami Miller defeated Monika Drabkova 6-2, 6-2 and is now one win away from No. 8 all-time in UH career singles wins. Also, sophomore Tiffany McLoughlin was victorious in the No. 6 spot with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over Eva Silvester. In doubles action, UH roared back to take the doubles point when seniors Kami Miller and Yolandi Terblanche notched an 8-2 victory over Nathalie Wallin and Barbara Mooney in the No. 2 spot, and Brianna Bateup and freshman Vicky Simpson claimed a 8-3 victory against Ana Paula Sota and Monika Drabkova in the No. 3 doubles position. Loli Gomez and Tiffany McLoughlin were out of the doubles lineup, but Houston had no problems in wake of their absence. Coach Severance said he felt proud of his team's effort after the match. "I was proud of the way we responded today after having some pieces out of the lineup," head coach John Severance said. "Sarah (Reimer) did a wonderful job stepping in for Loli (Gomez) in doubles, while Tiffany (McLoughlin) filled in nicely for Yolandi (Terblanche) in singles." Next, the Cougars will be looking to knock off the No. 42 ranked LSU Tigers at noon Wednesday at W.T. "Dub" Robinson Tennis Stadium. Severance said his team will be up for the challenge. "LSU is a very respected opponent," Severance said.
"We're going to go in there this week with nothing to lose. The pressure
is on them and not us. That's how we are going to approach it."
