Sports UH finishes Crowne Classic 3-2 ISU, Rhode Island, No. 25 BYU fall to Cougars over weekend Cougar Sports Services The Cougars (13-5) played through both rain and sunshine as they finished the Crowne Plaza Classic with a 3-2 record. Against Wichita State on Sunday, the Cougars dropped a 2-1 decision during nine innings of play. Tied at 1-1 going into the ninth, UH failed to score. Shortstop Britnee Barnett put the winning run on the board in favor of Wichita State. Katie Bush picked up two of the total three UH hits of the day. "It's the little things that make the difference in close games like today's," head coach Kyla Holas said in a release. "It's tough to swallow when you beat yourself where on the flip side you can deal with it a little bit easier whenever someone just beats you." In Saturday's late game, UH claimed a 2-0 victory against Iowa State. Junior pitcher Candi Kloecker struck out a career-best 13 batters, while carrying a no-hitter into the fourth. This was Kloecker's third win against a Big XII opponent. On Day 2, UH finished 1-1 after losing 4-0 to Texas State, and then rebounded with a 10-0 win against Rhode Island. The Bobcats were paced by Katie Ann Trahan in the circle and Amy Hromadka on offense. Trahan struck out 12 Cougar batters while giving up only two hits. Hromadka went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the seventh. Junior pitcher Carla Kennimer (2-1) and sophomore pitcher Barbie Love led Houston to a victory over Rhode Island. Kennimer allowed only two hits in five innings worth of work, while Love registered two strikeouts. Nordstrom finished 3-for-4 and began the hitting streak with an RBI-single in the first. "Elaina has really locked in on our hitting plan," Holas said in a release "I'm proud of the way she approaches each at-bat out there and how she forces pitchers to hit their spots." Three runs in the fourth, two more in the fifth and a base clearing double by Laura Durham in the sixth was more than enough to send the Rams packing. UH claimed its third win against a ranked opponent after defeating No. 25 Brigham Young on day one of the tournament. On day one, Kloecker (6-2) defeated a ranked opponent for the second time and fired her third compete game shutout of the season. The Cougars loaded the bases in the third to gain a 2-0 lead. Laurie Wagner increased the lead to 4-0 after a two-run double to left field. "I knew coming in that BYU was a very aggressive
and powerful team at the plate," Kloecker said in a release. "Those are
the types of teams that I like to face the most. Getting ahead is the count
is most important because that allows me to control the at-bat and throw
the pitch that I want to throw to the batter."
