Women finish first in C-USA tourney

Team earns second consecutive title

Cougar Sports Services

The UH women's indoor track and field hasn't had a problem of asserting its dominance in the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field championship meet over the last few years, and it had no problem doing so on Saturday, claiming the C-USA title for the second consecutive season and fourth time in the last five years.

The Cougars trailed Rice after Friday's events, but rallied to overtake the Owls 141.5-126. With the championship came another milestone for UH head coach Leroy Burrell who was named the C-USA Women's Indoor Coach of the year for the third time.

The men's team was unsuccessful in defending its title, finishing second behind C-USA newcomer Texas-El Paso with 153 points. The finish ended UH's three-year run as conference indoor champions.

The women's squad managed to gain the key advantage needed to overcome Rice in the meet when junior Caresir Hamilton captured the gold medal in the triple jump with a leap of 41-3.75 feet, along with teammate Kelli Williams finished eighth with a leap of 38-6.75 ft. Rice cut into the lead with a 27-point performance in the 3000-meters, but UH would seal the deal with a first-place (3:43.05) in the 4x400-meter relay.

Junior Carey LaCour provided the spark for the men's team, capturing the title in the 400-meter dash (47.31) and 200-meters (21.31). LaCour's times in the 400 and 200 meter races provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Indoor Championships in two weeks.
