Big birthday bash needs a playlist

Stay Sick

Jason Gagnon

My birthday is Sunday -- come out to the Jet Lounge that evening or the Turbojugend Humpday event at Rudyard's on March 8 -- and as has become tradition, here is my playlist for what is sure to be a chaotic weekend of debauchery that would make David Allen Coe blush.

Turbonegro — "Wasted Again"

I'm the minister of propaganda for Turbojugend Bayou City so it's a given the Norwegian death-punk gods would be on the list. This is a brilliant track from their latest record, Party Animals, about … well, getting trashed. After a few Irish car bombs and Asahis, I'll be hounding Bill Fool every 10 minutes to play this song. It does have the best line to describe my birthday celebrations: "My body is a temple / And tonight I'll tear it down!"

The Hatepinks — "Fashion is Crime" I've adopted this neo-wave punk tune as one of my theme songs because when I get drunk, I tend to make fun of people who look ridiculous trying to dress hip and chic. There are many people out there who first met me when I busted on them for wearing a Canadian tuxedo, a faux-hawk or tellum (the reverse mullet that is the standard hair cut for poodle-core bands everywhere). Some of them are friends now, but like the song says, fashion is crime. I know I'm a jerk, and I'm proud of it. You can all go to hell in your $150 jeans with pre-made holes for all I care.

The Stitches — "Brains on Vacation"

Do I really need to explain this song's inclusion on the list? I'm going to be in a Shane MacGowan state of mind. In fact, let's go ahead and amend the list right now to feature the Pogues' classic "Streams of Whiskey."

Riverboat Gamblers — "I Get Down"

For years I've been telling you faithful readers this is the best band in Texas, and that opinion hasn't changed. Some of the best rock 'n' roll around today awaits your ears if you check out this gem from their first album. And by the way, when I party, I get down.

The Black Halos — "1010"

Of course my boys from Vancouver made the list. Every time I see them, it's an out-of-control party, and I'll be sure to repeat that this weekend. With lyrics like, "In a back alley booze can / That's where you'll find me/ Trying to stay awake all night," this is one of their first singles and is simply one of the best glam-punk anthems you will ever have the pleasure of hearing.

Guitar Wolf — "All Through the Night Buttobase"

Of course, this title doesn't make sense because it's been crudely translated from Japanese ? it means "Let's Kick Ass All Night." That's pretty much how I feel about going out. Like Hunter S. Thompson said, "Anything worth doing is worth doing right." And the only way to have a real rock 'n' roll evening is to kick ass all night.
