Feeding James wins Frontier Fiesta event

Band set to open for Reckless Kelly for April 1 Fiesta concert

Feeding James beat out three other bands at Frontier Fiesta's Battle of the Bands on Monday to be named the opening act for Reckless Kelly and the Randy Rogers Band for this year's Fiesta concert on April 1.

The winner was chosen by stage performance, sound and crowd enthusiasm during the competition, which was held Monday night at the UC's Houston Room.

Feeding James also beat out the other bands -- Whiskey Dick, Carcen and Blistered Glory -- to earn eight free hours of recording time from Light in Sound Recording Studios.

Feeding James earned enough of a response from the crowd Monday night in UC's Houston Room to win Frontier Fiesta's Battle of the Bands and open for the organization's concert on April 1.

Blistered Glory opened the concert, and, unfortunately for the band, it was the guinea pig. The band had a slightly metallic buzz-band sound. The bass player tried to up the enthusiasm level by jumping off the stage, but the thin guitar sound and loud vocal mix did not help their chances.

Feeding James was a bit more polished than Blistered Glory. The bass player's sound was so low it almost sounded like a horde of tubas. The second song, "One More Chance," was a nice mid-tempo rocking ballad, but the band's performance seemed to go downhill when it closed by covering a Rage Against the Machine song.

The most original act of the night, Whiskey Dick, played next. Lead singer David Pella had a nice, rich country voice that could go from a slow waltz to a great cover of "Last Dance With Mary Jane." The sound troubles that plagued the other two bands were not found here. Whiskey Dick could easily be playing one of the many stages at this year's RodeoHouston.

Carcen, the last band of the night, seemed the most polished. Its sound evoked many of the popular bands heard on the radio station 94.5 The Buzz, but it had a "Is that a cover?" feel to it.
